What's the Applied Wisdom Institute Learning Format?

We provide a unique learning format that includes expert online instruction, mentored community action, and cohort collaboration. It’s modeled after Paulo Freire, and his renowned book Pedagogy of the Oppressed, which puts forth a new relationship of action-reflection with students, teachers and society. We encourage action on the concepts being learned, so that they are not only understood, but actually embodied and made real in the world.

Each module is made up of the following:

  • 6 – 8 weeks in an online seminar
  • the Certificate in Spirituality and Social Entrepreneurship has 3 – 4 weeks of online mentored experience of your proposed community project
  • the Certificate in Spirituality and Social Entrepreneurship also has 3 day in-person intensives before each new module.
How Long Does an Online Module Last?

Online modules typically require 1 ½ – 3 hours of time, per week, over 6 to 8 weeks.

What's Online and What's In-Person?

Each certificate has immersive, synchronous seminars that occur online. Some certificate seminars will either begin or end with a three day in-person intensive with the Thought Leaders.

What Expenses are Included in the Fee for the In-Person Intensives?

Food and lodging are included. Travel is not.

Do You Have to Attend the In-Person Intensives?

Yes, if you wish to earn the Certificate in Spirituality and Social Entrepreneurship. Otherwise it’s not required.

Can a Module Be Used For Credit At Another Academic Institution?

Maybe! We do not provide academic credit at this time, but do check with your institution. We will gladly help you with any required materials or paperwork.

Are CE's or CEU'S Available?

Yes! Check with us about the requirements of your governing body.

What Do You Mean By Spirituality? Do I Have To Be Religious?

People all over the world have differing definitions of being spiritually connected. Your cohort will include a wide range of people in different places on their spiritual journey. There is strength in all of these differences, and you will learn from their different perspectives. We believe that spirituality is a reverence for the interconnectness of us all.

Can I Donate?

Yes!  We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. You can donate to a general fund, provide scholarships, or give a Wisdom Seed Grant to encourage a particular vision that inspires you. Funding for the Applied Wisdom Institute is provided by The Alexander Montgomery Foundation. How Are The Wisdom Seed Grants Awarded?

For the Certificate in Spirituality and Entrepreneurship, The Applied Wisdom Institute facilitators and participating angel investors will choose 1 (one) certificate graduate based on three criteria – effectiveness of proposal, ability to create real and lasting change, and the level of challenge or risk in the project.
